Rethinking Sustainability Goals: Why Recycled Content

rethinking sustainability

The Opportunity

In the evolving market of sustainable packaging, companies are increasingly turning to recycled content as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote circularity. Recycled content involves repurposing used plastics into new packaging, thereby decreasing reliance on virgin materials as well as consumer behaviors. Using recycled content can reduce energy consumption by at least 79% and lower greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing nearly 500,000 cars from the road annually.

The Challenge

The path to sustainability is complex. Many companies are reassessing their goals of achieving 100% recyclable or compostable packaging by specific deadlines. This reevaluation stems from the realization that such objectives may conflict with carbon emission reduction targets. For example, while paper packaging is recyclable, it often requires more material and is heavier than thin flexible plastic alternatives. This increased weight leads to higher transportation emissions, creating a paradox where efforts to enhance recyclability may inadvertently elevate carbon footprints.

The Solution

This dilemma has led some companies to shift their focus toward decarbonization strategies, incorporating more recycled content into their packaging. By doing so, they aim to reduce the carbon footprint of their products while fostering steady demand for recycled materials and encouraging consumer participation.

Navigating these decisions is challenging, and our team is dedicated to identifying current and future trends in sustainable packaging. We partner with respected certification bodies to ensure that the packaging we offer meets the rigorous sustainability standards that will provide our customers with credible and effective solutions.
